Sunday

A couple of Tates, Holbein, a cruise down the Thames, and St. Paul's

This morning, we managed to get out and about pretty early - good thing - there's a lot to do! First, we headed off to the Tate Britain and took in the Holbein exhibit. It was breathtaking - it's Holbein the Younger and his time in England - focusing a lot on his time with King Henry VIII's court. Everyone there (and there were many, even though we were let in on timed tickets) seemed to be taking something different away. I was mostly interested in the detail in the clothing, of course, especially the exquisite care taken in the embroidery...so beautiful! What I didn't know, is that he also did a lot of engraving for books, designing jewelery and metalwork for hilts of daggers and swords, decorative objects for the home - just everything!

We decided to leave by the Tate to Tate boat - leaving from the Tate Britain and heading east on the Thames to the Tate Modern~we wanted to see the building, though not necessarily the modern art inside! It was a fun little way to get a short cruise down the Thames and also get where we were going.

What we really wanted to do was walk over the Millennium Bridge and see St. Paul's looming up in front of us! Spectacular! But first, we were delighted to find the Globe Theatre as it was re-created right at the pier. We spent a few minutes there and then walked across the bridge to St. Paul's Cathedral - often called Wren's masterpiece. This is the church where John Donne preached and where he's buried, as well as Wren.  It's a very imposing view as you come across the bridge to come up the stairs to it.

A brief time at St. Paul's, and it was time to find the tube station and head home....
