Sunday

We're heeeeeere!!

Phew! We made it! Had a good trip over - less than eight hours in the air, though more like 12 door to door because you need to get to the airport so early! We arrived at 11:30 a.m. the morning after we left and found a cash machine to get some pounds, then found the tube station (right in the airport terminal) and got our Oyster cards and took the tube (one change) to our apartment building, which is just about 100 steps away from the tube station!

We unpacked and looked around a bit - brought in some groceries (there's a Marks and Spencer just down the street, and a regular grocery store as well), and had dinner. We both felt like we'd been up for 24 hours, but tried our best to stay up til our regular bedtime. We made it til 9 p.m.! And awoke at 3 a.m. and took hours to go back to sleep, but today we'll do much better.

After a slow start to today, we're starting to feel more like "ourselves" this evening. We went out in the early afternoon to the
Museum of London), where we found out a little bit about where we are. I took lots of pictures but have discovered that the cord I need to download the pictures to this computer is till hooked up to my desktop computer back home! So you'll all have to wait!

:(

This gave us a great grounding in London History - styles of dress during different times, etc. Some of the most interesting parts were the exhibits from during the time when the city was part of the Roman Empire, and called Londinium! There is a ruin by the Museum, of a wall built in Roman times, and that was very cool to see - it doesn't really look out of place by the modern buildings in the financial and business district where the museum is located.

We also enjoyed seeing the Lord Mayor's State Coach, which is normally in the museum, but for one week a year, it's taken down to the Guild Hall to be readied for use to carry the newly-elected Lord Mayor of London (mostly an honorific title now, his chief duties being entertaining visiting dignitaries and acting as a goodwill ambassador, representing London as a world leader in business).

The weather has been terriffic so far - sunny and warm yesterday, overcast but dry today, though it has started raining this evening. Tomorrow we head off to our first taste of Portobello Road and some shopping fun!

Boy are you every the typical American tourist :-) You have done so much in one day. I'm so glad you discovered Marks & Spencer (known as M&S) their food is just the best. So easy and you don't have to buy loads. My sister once made a meal and put a plackard on the table saying "Compliments of M&S" I should do one saying "Compliments of Costco" because I use so much of their stuff. I'm just so glad you guys are having a good time and aren't suffering too much from jet lag. Have a great weekend. Lots of love Patti xxx
